Gangtey Tshechu - Popular Festivals in Bhutan

Gangtey Tshechu (festival) takes place in the large courtyard of Gangtey (Ganteng) Goenpa monastery, which is located on thegangtey-festival-Bhutan hillock overlooking Phobjikha valley.  This three-day annual festival is held with performance of various sacred mask dances those are based on Peling tradition and some unique to Gangtey valley. The festival also showcases interesting folk songs and concludes with Nguedup Langwa, a spiritual blessing for wisdom and power. Locals turn up for the festival in their finest clothes and jewelry and for them it is an important religious and social occasion which exudes a carnival like atmosphere.

Phobjikha valley in Gangtey is also the winter roosting ground of the migratory and rare black necked cranes those migrate here in winter months from Tibetan plateau.
