Gasa Tshechu - Popular Festivals in Bhutan


The Gasa Tshechu is the biggest festival held in the month of March or early April in the small district of Gasa in northwest Bhutan which is home to highlander communities. Several mask and folk dances performed during festival those have deep meaning and performed by monks and laymen alike. Goenzhay, a long form dance category that has its origin to the Zhabdrung Rinpoche's daysis one of the main highlights of the three-day Gasa tshechu. The Goenzhay performers wear thick woollen red Ghos matched with a black tego and are led by a Zhapey (dance leader) who also wears a helmet. The festival spreads positivity in entire region with a variety of indigenous dance performances and is a special occasion for locals to socialize and receive blessings.
