Masutake Mushroom Festival - Popular Festivals in Bhutan

The annual Masutake Mushroom Festival was initiated in 2008 by Thrumshingla National Park in collaboration with Ura Mushroom Conservation and Tourism association (UMCTA) aiming to showcase the native mushrooms and other local products and their link to the livelihood of local community.

Held annually in the month of August at enchanting Ura valley, the festival provides opportunity to visitors to identity fabled Masutake while mushroom picking up excursion, showcase sustainable harvesting practices, sample delicious Masutake recipes, participate in local songs & dances along with locals and gain insight into Bhutanese customs, hike through amazing Himalayan landscape or relax in open-air mineral baths.      

Highly prized by gourmets around the world due to its spicy-aromatic odour, the Masutake mushroom is native to the forests of Ura valley in central Bhutan and grows in clusters at the base of pine trees at an altitude of more than 9,800 feet and collected once a year during harvesting season which is from July till September.
